Choosing a Museum Visit in Tarija

Museums in Tarija range from a convent collection of colonial-period sacred art to paleontological and archaeological displays. For a focused visit, choose between those two collections first; other local options include a museum devoted to Tarija’s art and culture and the museum at San Roque church.

The Museo Franciscano is about a six-minute walk from Terravina Hotel del Vino. The Museo Nacional Paleontológico-Arqueológico is about an 11-minute walk from the hotel. Their locations make both options practical to consider for a museum visit in central Tarija.

Museo Franciscano Fray Francisco Miguel Marí

Museo Franciscano Fray Francisco Miguel Marí

Part of the San Francisco convent complex in central Tarija, the Museo Franciscano focuses on sacred art. Its collection includes colonial-period paintings, sculptures and liturgical objects. The convent complex was declared a national monument in 2006.

You’ll find the museum on Calle Colón, between Ingavi and La Madrid. The listed weekday visiting hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00–11:00 and 15:00–19:00. Visitors are asked to reserve 24 hours in advance, and the listing specifies groups of at least three and no more than eight.

Listed admission is Bs 3 for minors, Bs 5 for university students, and Bs 15 for adults and foreign visitors. If you’re also interested in a notable local building, read about visiting Casa Dorada in Tarija.

Museo Nacional Paleontológico-Arqueológico

Museo Nacional Paleontológico-Arqueológico

The Museo Nacional Paleontológico Arqueológico de Tarija, also known as MUNAPARQ, brings together natural history and archaeology. Its exhibits include fossil mammals, invertebrates, mineralogy, petrography, anthropology and archaeology from Tarija’s provinces. The museum building began construction in 1941 and was completed in 1950.

MUNAPARQ is at Calle General Trigo 402, on the corner of Virginio Lema. The listed hours are Monday to Friday, 08:30–12:30 and 15:00–18:30, with last entry at 12:00 and 18:00. On Saturday and Sunday, listed hours are 08:30–12:30, with last entry at 12:00.

Listed admission is Bs 2 for children and students, Bs 5 for adults, and Bs 20 for foreign visitors. These details make it possible to compare the museum’s schedule and entry prices with the Franciscan collection before setting out.

The Casa de Enriqueta Ulloa describes itself as a space for preserving and sharing Tarija’s art and culture, housed in a restored colonial house in the historic center. Its address is Calle Ingavi E-0659. Listed hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00–12:00 and 15:00–18:00, and Saturday, 09:00–13:00; it is closed Sundays and holidays.

Admission is listed as Bs 20 for adults, Bs 10 for students and older adults, and free for children up to 12 years old. Guided visits are available in Spanish and English. Group visits should check availability through the museum’s contact channels.

At the San Roque church museum, the municipal government identifies garments made for the saint as a point of interest, including garments more than 100 years old. If you’re arranging arrival in the city as well as museum visits, see this guide to getting from Tarija Airport to the city.

Opening Hours, Tickets and Visitor Access

Hours, admission prices and access arrangements vary between these collections. The Franciscan museum listing asks for advance reservation and sets group-size limits; MUNAPARQ lists different last-entry times for its morning and afternoon sessions, while Casa de Enriqueta Ulloa offers guided visits and asks groups to confirm availability.

Before arranging your route, check the official site before you go. That’s especially useful for confirming current hours, prices and any reservation or group-visit requirements.
